About Department

  • GOAL
    The broad goal of the teaching of undergraduate students in the Obstetrics and Gynaecology Department is to ensure they possess the requisite knowledge, skills, attitudes, values, and responsiveness to function appropriately and effectively as a physician of first contact of the community. The training aims to create an Indian Medical Graduate (IMG) who is globally relevant, compassionate, and fully compliant with the CBME curriculum guidelines for comprehensive women’s healthcare.

  • OBJECTIVES
    During the training, students should acquire the following competencies, knowledge, and skills so that they can practice effectively in public health, maternal care, and reproductive health after graduation.

  • COMPETENCIES:
    The undergraduate must demonstrate the ability to:
    1. Understand Health and Disease: Grasp the concepts of physiological and pathological changes throughout a woman's life cycle, including adolescence, pregnancy, childbirth, and menopause.
    2. Provide Holistic Care: Deliver preventive, promotive, curative, palliative, and holistic obstetric and gynecological care with utmost compassion and empathy.
    3. Advance Quality and Safety: Participate appropriately and effectively in measures that advance maternal and neonatal safety, quality of healthcare, and patient safety within the health care system.
    4. Communicate Professionally: Communicate with patients, families, colleagues, and the community respectfully, keeping in mind the patient’s preferences, cultural values, prior experiences, beliefs, confidentiality, and privacy—especially regarding sensitive reproductive health issues.
    5. Commit to Continuous Learning: Perform objective self-assessment of knowledge and skills, continue learning, refine existing skills, and acquire new skills in women's health.
    6. Apply Evidence-Based Care: Apply newly gained knowledge or clinical skills directly to patient care for rational clinical decision-making.
    7. Navigate Ethical Conflicts: Recognize and manage ethical, legal, and professional conflicts, particularly relating to reproductive rights, contraception, and termination of pregnancy.
    8. Think Independently: Perceive, analyze, synthesize, and evaluate clinical information obtained through observation and detailed Obstetric and Gynaecological History to develop independence of thought, clarity, integrity, and self-confidence.
    9. Act as a Researcher: Generate and interpret clinical evidence to ensure effective patient care while actively contributing to medical research and practice in reproductive health.

  • KNOWLEDGE:
    At the end of the course, the student shall be able to:
    1. Monitor Normal and Abnormal Pregnancy: Assess and promote optimal maternal health during antenatal, intranatal, and postnatal periods, and identify deviations from normal.
    2. Recognize Emergencies: Identify obstetric and gynecological emergencies and serious patients, with the clinical knowledge to provide routine ambulatory and First Level Referral Unit (FRU) care, knowing exactly when to refer.
    3. Promote Reproductive Health: Counsel, promote health, and prevent diseases in women, with a deep understanding of family welfare, contraception, and safe motherhood practices.
    4. Understand National Health Programmes: Master National Health Programmes related to maternal and child health, including Janani Suraksha Yojana (JSY), Janani Shishu Suraksha Karyakram (JSSK), and Pradhan Mantri Surakshit Matritva Abhiyan (PMSMA).
    5. Understand Core Disorders: Describe common obstetric and gynecological disorders (such as pre-eclampsia, abnormal uterine bleeding, pelvic inflammatory diseases, and reproductive tract malignancies) in terms of epidemiology, etiopathogenesis, clinical manifestations, diagnosis, rational therapy, and rehabilitation services.
    6. Prescribe Rationally: Know the specialized fluid, nutritional, and drug dosage requirements (including teratogenic profiles of drugs) for pregnant, lactating, and non-pregnant female patients.
    7. Outline Screening and Prevention: Describe screening strategies for common gynecological cancers (like cervical and breast cancer), prevention of pelvic infections, and management of domestic violence or sexual assault cases.
    8. Interpret Investigations: Demonstrate knowledge of bedside investigative procedures, common laboratory investigations, imaging modalities (like ultrasound), and necessary medical or surgical therapies.
    9. Understand Diagnostic & Operative Procedures: Demonstrate knowledge about all steps of diagnostic and operative procedures such as pap smear, cervical biopsy, endometrial aspiration, dilatation and curettage (D&C), laparoscopy, and Caesarean section.

  • SKILLS:
    At the end of the course, the student shall be able to:
    1. Track Reproductive Milestones: Describe normal physiological changes during pregnancy, labor, puerperium, and menopause, and identify deviations thereof.
    2. Perform Primary Care Procedures: Perform essential obstetric and gynecological procedures indicated in a primary care setting safely.
    3. Implement National Programs: Participate actively in National Health Programmes related to maternal health, safe abortion services, and family planning choices.
    4. Communicate Sensitvely: Counsel and communicate appropriately and effectively regarding family planning, safe sex practices, infertility, and menopause.
    5. Calculate Clinical Metrics: Calculate gestational age, expected date of delivery (EDD), and appropriately manage nutritional and drug requirements for obstetric and gynecological patients.
    6. Conduct Physical Examinations: Take a detailed Obstetric and Gynecological history, conduct systematic general, abdominal, and pelvic physical examinations, formulate a clinical diagnosis, and maintain a partograph during labor.
    7. Interpret Lab Data: Perform basic bedside investigative procedures, interpret common laboratory/imaging investigations, plan treatment paths, and institute correct therapies.
    8. Execute Essential Clinical Actions: Take pap smears, perform per-vaginal examinations safely, conduct normal deliveries, manage postpartum hemorrhage (PPH), provide newborn resuscitation, administer vaccines under current national programs, and assist in basic obstetric/gynecological surgeries.
    9. Distinguish High-Risk Cases: Distinguish between normal pregnancies/labor and high-risk cases requiring specialized care (e.g., severe pre-eclampsia, eclampsia, obstructed labor), providing immediate initial care before organizing safe, timely transfer.
    10. Provide Ambulatory Care: Offer routine ambulatory care to outpatient gynecological cases, recognize indications for specialized inpatient care, and ensure timely referral.
