  • GOAL
    The Department of T.B. & Respiratory Medicine aims to provide comprehensive training in prevention, diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation, and research related to respiratory diseases. The department strives to develop competent pulmonologists capable of delivering evidence-based, ethical, patient centered, and community oriented respiratory healthcare services while contributing to academics and research.

  • OBJECTIVES
    1. Develop expertise in diagnosis and management of respiratory and critical care illnesses.
    2. Train students in advanced pulmonary diagnostic and therapeutic procedures.
    3. Promote clinical reasoning, evidence-based medicine, and ethical practice.
    4. Encourage academic activities, research, and publications.
    5. Develop communication skills and multidisciplinary teamwork.
    6. Provide exposure to preventive, rehabilitative, and public health aspects of respiratory diseases.
    7. Boost leadership qualities and lifelong learning.

    COMPETENCIES
    KNOWLEDGE COMPETENCIES:
    A Postgraduate student/ Intern should be able to:
    1. Describe anatomy, physiology, pathology, microbiology, immunology, and pharmacology related to the respiratory system.
    2. Explain etiology, pathogenesis, clinical features, diagnosis, and management of respiratory diseases including tuberculosis, COPD, asthma, ILD, pleural diseases, pulmonary infections, sleep disorders, occupational lung diseases, lung malignancies, pulmonary vascular diseases, and respiratory failure.
    3. Interpret pulmonary function tests, ABG analysis, radiological investigations, and sleep studies.
    4. Understand principles of mechanical ventilation and respiratory critical care.
    5. Demonstrate knowledge of national health programs related to tuberculosis and respiratory diseases.
    6. Discuss indications, contraindications, complications, and interpretation of bronchoscopic and pleural procedures.
    7. Apply principles of research methodology, biostatistics, and medical ethics.

    SKILLS COMPETENCIES:
    A Postgraduate student/ Intern should be able to:
    1. Obtain detailed respiratory history and perform comprehensive clinical examination.
    2. Diagnose and manage common and emergency respiratory conditions independently.
    3. Perform and interpret spirometry, pulmonary function tests, ABG sampling, thoracocentesis, pleural procedures, oxygen therapy, and ventilatory support.
    4. Assist and perform basic bronchoscopic procedures.
    5. Manage respiratory emergencies including acute severe asthma, COPD exacerbation, pneumothorax, hemoptysis, and respiratory failure.
    6. Communicate effectively with patients, relatives, and healthcare teams.
    7. Participate in seminars, journal clubs, case presentations, teaching, and research activities.
    8. Maintain proper medical records and documentation.

    INTEGRATION:
    A Postgraduate student/ Intern should be able to:
    1. Integrate radiological findings with clinical respiratory evaluation for accurate diagnosis and management.
    2. Correlate microbiological, pathological, and laboratory investigations with pulmonary diseases.
    3. Integrate principles of critical care, anesthesia, and mechanical ventilation in respiratory emergencies.
    4. Apply knowledge of cardiology in evaluation of cardiopulmonary disorders and pulmonary hypertension.
    5. Integrate surgical aspects in management of thoracic and pleural diseases.
    6. Apply community medicine principles in tuberculosis control, smoking cessation, vaccination, and respiratory health awareness.
    7. Integrate pulmonary rehabilitation, physiotherapy, and palliative care in comprehensive patient management.
    8. Participate in multidisciplinary team-based management of respiratory illnesses.
