About Department

  • GOAL
    The broad goal of teaching undergraduate students in General Surgery is to prepare them to function as first-level surgeons as per CBME to create Indian Medical Graduates (IMG).
  • OBJECTIVES
    During the training, students should acquire the following competencies, knowledge, skills, and hands-on training to practice general surgery effectively after graduation.
    • Competencies
      The undergraduate must demonstrate:
      1. Understanding of the concept of surgical and general anatomy.
      2. Understanding of the concept of the pathophysiology of a disease requiring surgery.
      3. Understanding of demography, population dynamics, and disease burden in National and global context.
      4. Demonstrating cultural and professional competencies.
      5. Comprehension of principles of surgery.
      6. Understanding the core knowledge of the surgery.
      7. Understanding of physical, social, psychological, economic, and environmental determinants of the disease requiring surgery.
      8. Ability to recognize, investigate, report, and plan accordingly in routine and emergencies.
      9. To work as a team
      10. Developing an attitude to accept and learn from the mistakes.
      11. To be aware of signs and symptoms that indicate changes in the patient's condition and to be able to solve the problems, prioritize, and plan for contingency.
      12. Strong commitment to their patients, community, and profession.
    • Knowledge
      At the end of the course, the student shall be able to:
      1. To manage the diagnostic dilemma and to derive a diagnosis in the most cost and time-effective ways.
      2. To be able to understand the complexities of the procedure and the risks and complications involved in it.
      3. To handle critical and emergency situations.
      4. A good knowledge of pre-operative assessment and preparation followed by good post-operative care including Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS).
      5. To cope with the stress and to Perform and function as a leader.
      6. Obtaining informed and written consent and close observation in Medicolegal cases.
      7. To know the system of PMJAY – MAA scheme and how to manage the best of it.
      8. Orientation of advanced surgical procedures (Like Laparoscopy, LASER, Endoscopy, Colonoscopy and other minimally access tools).
    • Skills
      At the end of the course, the student would be able to perform:
      1. Good communication skills with patients, colleagues, seniors, and other staff members. They should be able to explain complex surgical procedures in easy-to-understand language to the patients and their keens.
      2. Basic surgical skills like Wound Suturing (In both Elective and Emergencies), Endotracheal intubation, insertion of an IV cannula, Foley’s catheter, and nasogastric tube. Incision and Drainage of pus or cavity under local anaesthesia.
      3. Excisions of lumps, tru-cut/incisional/excisional biopsies.
      4. Chest tube thoracotomy.
      5. Polytrauma management.
      6. Perform and function as a leader.
      7. Observe the principles of medical ethics in the practice of his/her profession.
  • Integration of Biochemistry in Medical Education and Healthcare:
    The department shall adopt an integrated approach towards other clinical and non-clinical disciplines, to impart training to enable the graduate to work at all levels of healthcare. The teaching should be aligned and integrated horizontally and vertically to allow the learner to understand the impact of surgical diseases.
